The late Gerard Potel was always a courageous pacesetter and a force for better
Burgundy. Starting life as a farmer in the Aisne, he became director of the
Domaine de la Pousse d’Or in 1964 and was one of the first growers to discard
less than perfect grapes at vintage time, thus ensuring his domaine-bottled
wines were only of the highest standard each year. Thirty four years on,
Gerard was one of the two surest sources of great Volnay, the other being
Michel Lafarge.
The Domaine owns 13 hectares of the finest sites in Volnay and is the largest
proprietor of Volnay Caillerets, owning the monopole of Clos de 60 Ouvrees.
The 1991 is a superb wine from a very underrated vintage, its soaring Volnay
aromas and concentrated, but in no way overoaked, flavours typical of Gerard’s
light touch in the winemaking. The Domaine’s top wine, the monopole Clos
de la Bousse d’Or, is made from vines in the heart of the Volnay hill - a
magical, silken-textured red Burgundy of the highest class.
